Hawk Fire continues in US, burning more than 10,000 acres

The Hawk Fire in Nevada has expanded to 10,522 acres, with firefighters working to protect communities, structures and critical infrastructure.

According to 2News Nevada, approximately 400 personnel from local, state and federal agencies are currently working the fire, with ground crews and air resources deployed to contain the fire.

Truckee Meadows Fire and Rescue said the fire experienced significant growth throughout the day as strong, gusty winds, low humidity and dry vegetation continued to fuel its spread.

Firefighters were expected to continue operations as they worked to protect threatened communities and infrastructure.

The Nevada National Guard is also supporting aerial firefighting operations, deploying a CH-47 Chinook crew and a UH-60 Black Hawk to assist in efforts to contain the fire.

Additionally, 60 members of the Nevada National Guard Response Force have been called up to support local law enforcement in protecting evacuated neighborhoods.

Evacuations have expanded southward, affecting the Somersett community, including areas north of Somersett Parkway to Robb Drive, as well as neighborhoods in northwest Reno.

Rancho San Rafael Park has also been closed as the fire continues to spread.

An evacuation center has been established at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center, located at 4590 South Virginia Street, Reno.

Small animals can be brought to Washoe County Regional Animal Services on Longley Lane, while there is currently no evacuation center available for large animals.

The fire has also prompted evacuation warnings in Sierra County, California, as authorities continue to monitor its movement.

Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo has declared a state of emergency in Washoe County due to the continued spread of the Hawk Fire.

According to the statement, all state agencies have been directed to work through the Nevada Emergency Operations Center to supplement local response efforts.
