Iran threatens ‘devastating’ response to Trump’s sanctions threat

Iran has threatened a “devastating” response to new US economic measures after President Donald Trump vowed to impose what Washington describes as its toughest sanctions yet against Tehran.

The Chief of Staff of Iran’s Armed Forces, Maj. Gen. Ali Abdollahi, said the country was prepared to respond by land, sea, air, air defense and cyberspace if the United States proceeded with the new threats.

The warning came after Trump announced an “economic D-Day” against Iran, promising an unprecedented campaign of economic warfare and isolation aimed at forcing Tehran to abandon its nuclear program and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is expected to outline the new sanctions on Monday. Trump has also warned countries, companies and financial institutions not to provide what he described as any “lifeline” to Iran, threatening them with economic consequences.

Iranian officials have rejected US pressure, arguing that previous sanctions have failed to force the government to change course. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi called the proposed measures illegal and warned they could further damage the global economy.

China has also opposed additional sanctions from the United States, with its Foreign Ministry saying pressure and sanctions would not resolve the conflict and urging Washington and Tehran to engage in diplomatic negotiations.

The latest confrontation comes as the Strait of Hormuz remains severely disrupted by the conflict, affecting global oil supplies and raising concerns about energy prices.

The standoff between the United States and Iran has continued for months despite attempts to reach a lasting agreement. Washington wants Tehran to end its nuclear program and reopen the strategic waterway, while Iran has rejected key US demands.

The latest threats have raised fears that economic pressure could trigger further military escalation, particularly if Tehran follows through on its warning of retaliation.
