Following the success of the first edition, Africa Film Academy (AFA) and the Lagos State Government (LASG) are ready to create another edition of the ‘Film in a Box’ initiative.
The initiative aims to empower young filmmakers by providing training and mentoring to foster the growth of the creative industry in Lagos.
During the first edition in June 2022, 860 young Lagosians were trained in various aspects of filmmaking.
They all received gr,ants from the government as many of them have since integrated into the Nollywood mainstream.
The African Film Academy was founded by the late Nigerian filmmaker and founder of the AMAA Peace Awards Anyiam-Osigwe (MFR), who passed away in January, as an organization focused on training, mentoring and promoting African film and film. .
Since 2005, the academy has provided various programs aimed at empowering African filmmakers and creating opportunities for them to showcase their work to a global audience.
In an AFA press release, The Film Academy and the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture under the initiative of the Lagos State Creative Industry (LACI) partnered again to launch the second edition of Film in a Box Lagos.
LACI, a state government initiative, is an innovative program designed to support and develop the creative industry, including training, capacity building, and the provision of infrastructure and financial support.
According to the academy, the combined effort will provide free training for young people in Epe, Badagry, Ikeja, Ikorodu and Lagos Island.

Habib Sheidu, AFA Strategy and Training Associate, said: “Film in a Box” is a capacity building framework that equips people with the skill sets needed in the creative industry space, enabling the person becomes financially empowered.
Training will cover acting, directing, producing, set design, costume design, prop management, film and television makeup, screenwriting, editing, cinematography, and sound production.

Veteran Nollywood actor and AFA Director of Studies Ekpenyong Bassey-Inyang also stressed the importance of training programs like ‘Film in a Box’ in the growth and advancement of the creative industry.
“We saw dramatic improvements in our students’ positive behavior last year, which also helps build young leaders.” He said.
The Project Manager of ‘Film in a Box’ expressed appreciation for the commitment of AFA leaders and the Lagos State Government to continue this project, even with the passing of its founder, Ms. Anyiam-Osigwe, MFR.
