The president of the United States, Donald Trump, said on Friday that Chicago will be the next city in which his administration focuses on his repression of federal crime and suggested a longer campaign in Washington, DC.
“We will straighten that, probably then, that will be the next after this,” Trump said from the Oval office. “I think Chicago will be our next and then we will help with New York.”
Trump proved his movement for Federal to the Washington police force and send to the National Guard troops with the reduction of crime, pointing out a week without murders such as a “miracle”, although such weeks they have happened in the city several times this year. He said he could keep the troops on guard there “all the time he wants to” declaring a national emergency.
More than 1,900 members of the DC Guard and several states in the capital have been deployed, according to the Joint DC working group.
Trump also criticized the mayor of DC Muriel Bowser and threatened with a stronger federal control. “I am tired of listening to these people to say how sure it was before we got here. Trump attacked the mayor of Chicago Brandon Johnson as “incompetent” and said the city had become more dangerous under his leadership. “When we are ready, we will enter and straighten Chicago as we did DC,” he said.
How such an operation would work in Chicago still is clear. Unlike DC, which is under federal authority in certain areas, cities have greater control over their own police. Trump also seemed to confuse the deployment of the National Guard in DC with the authority of his administration to take care of the Local Police. According to the interior rule law of the Columbia district, the Federal Government can only control the City Police up to 30 days during emergencies, unless Congress extends that power. The lawyers of the Department of Justice told a federal judge last week that without Congress actions, Trump’s order would expire.
Trump has argued that federal participation in DC surveillance must last longer to reduce crime. “It is one thing to take them out, it is something else to keep them out for a long period of time,” he said. “That will take more than 30 days.”
He also said that he had spoken with the president of the House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, and the leader of the majority of the Senate, John Thune, on looking for $ 2 billion for DC improvement projects, calling the financing “very easy to obtain.”
