Annoyed by the growing wave of attacks on firefighters and fire apparatus, the federal government has again warned Nigerians against such practices, urging them instead to appreciate the difficult environment in which personnel operate.

The controller general of the Federal Fire Service FFS, Dr. Liman Alhaji Ibrahim, gave the warning on Tuesday in Abuja while congratulating all firefighters from Nigeria and around the world at this year’s International Firefighters Day IFFD.

Liman, in the statement signed by the Public Relations Officer of the Service, SF Ugo Huan, asked citizens to assimilate the attitude of appreciating and supporting firefighters for the sacrifices they make to save lives and property during emergencies.

The Comptroller General, who expressed his sadness at the attitude of some citizens who like to attack firefighters at fire scenes, took advantage of the occasion of this year’s International Firefighters Day to call them to “desist from the constant attack on firefighters and the destruction of fire scene trucks, as that is not encouraging for firefighters who risk their lives to save lives and property ”.

recalls that International Firefighters Day is celebrated annually on May 4 and was instituted after a proposal was sent by email to the world on January 4, 1999, following the death of five firefighters in tragic circumstances in a forest fire in Australia.

The unfortunate incident was what inspired JJ Edmondson to hold an international holiday, called International Firefighters Day, to support lost and dedicated firefighters who risk their lives every day while saving lives and property.

CG Liman specifically praised fallen heroes who lost beloved lives in the line of duty and prayed that God will continue to grant them eternal rest and give their loved ones the strength to endure the loss.

He said that while they may have traveled further, they remain alive in the hearts of those for whom they sacrificed their lives.

The Comptroller General took the occasion of the IFFD to thank Nigerian firefighters at the federal, state and private sector levels, as well as those in service and in retirement for all their sacrifices to ensure the safety of lives and property.

In recent months, firefighters had faced attacks by angry youths at fire scenes in some parts of the country, including the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, with many of them injured and their fire trucks wrecked.
