The telecommunications company, Airtel Nigeria Limited, has become the only bidder in the second round of licenses for the deployment of 5G technology.

the Nigerian Communications Commission It said on Wednesday that Airtel applied for the 3.5GHz spectrum along with Standard Network & Connections Limited, but only Airtel made the required down payment.

“However, only Airtel paid the Intent to Offer Deposit (IBD) as stipulated in the Information Memorandum (IM),” NCC spokesman Reuben Morka said in a statement.

“Standard Network sent an appeal via email to have the deadline extended by 12 business days, which was not acceptable given the auction schedule,” it added.

“Having complied with all the provisions in the IM, Airtel has therefore become the sole bidder,” he said.

The commission said there will be no more tenders.

“He (the NCC) will proceed to the allocation stage in accordance with the published Information Memorandum that guides the licensing process,” he said.

Airtel participated in the first auction in 2021, but lost after MTN and Mafab Communications won the bid.

MTN has implemented the latest technology in seven cities so far.
