The Labor Party in the Municipal Area Council of Abuja (AMAC) has taken a bold step towards promoting transparency and responsibility in its electoral process by introducing a meeting of the City Council where applicants, including candidates, will be interrogated by delegates before the primaries.
The president of the AMAC party, Hon Ifeanyi Ugochukwu, talking with journalists after the “great debate for the candidates of LP Amac presidency” held on Saturday in Abuja, said the initiative is designed to present applicants of the Labor Party who wish to compete in the next elections of the Council Council.
“They will be presented with the delegates in the primary elections and will also answer questions about update issues that bother Amac,” said Ugochukwu.
“We need to do something different from what can be obtained. If we want to change Nigeria, if we want to change the narrative, we need those who will represent us to come and talk to us,” he added.
According to him, the City Council meeting provides a platform for applicants to show their vision and ideas directly to the delegates that will vote in the primaries.
“We want to place all the applicants in a hot seat to tell us what they have to offer us. And so I think that through this process, we can produce the best of the best,” he said.
Ugochukwu emphasized that the process will be open and transparent, with the media playing a crucial role to guarantee responsibility.
“We are going to involve the media in all our processes. The media will be there. Then, if we say that it is free and fair, even the media can also present it because they are part and plot of the process,” he said.
The president expressed his confidence that this interactive platform will help the party to present strong and credible candidates.
“We will not be afraid when our candidate is outside. We can overcome our chest and say that this person can represent us,” he said.
The initiative has been well received by members and delegates of the party, who see it as a refreshing change in traditional candidate selection methods.
By involving directly with the delegates, the Labor Party is promoting a more inclusive and participatory electoral process, one that could shape its future electoral perspectives.
“By producing candidates that are responsible and respond to the needs of their voters, the Labor Party can generate confidence and credibility with voters,” said Ugochukwu.
“As the party continues with this new approach, it will be interesting to see how the electoral landscape in Amac affects. One thing is safe: the Labor Party is committed to transparency and responsibility, and this initiative is a significant step in the right direction,” he concluded.
