The former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, accused the Tinubu Ball Administration of weapons poverty in the country.
While Atiku declared that rising poverty in the country was deliberate, a former governor of the state of Kaduna, Nasir El-Rufai, described rising poverty in the country as the biggest problem Nigeria has had since 1914.
Both made the statements during a public conference to mark the 60th birthday of the former governor of the state of Rivers, Rotimi Amachi, on Saturday.
Atiku explained that “when growing in the north, the most prosperous city or state was the state of Kano. As soon as I finished my high school, my first location was the state of Kano. I never saw people sleeping outside, so there were no bridges or passage walks.
“I never saw people sleeping outside or outside the stores in the state of Kano, but recently, I saw that people were sleeping under the bridge or in the streets
“These people are expelled by poverty and insecurity. There is a state agency in Kano responsible for providing support to these people and began doing their job and enlightening people and eliminating people from under bridges and outside the streets.
“What happened? They were called Abuja and they were told to stop him. That's why I said I wanted to amend today's issue to add the state poverty weapon,” he said.
Atiku also said: “This particular government is putting together poverty. You can call me a conspirator, you can call me anything, and that is why we are in this alliance to ensure that we do not allow them to continue with the weapons. Of course, one of our star conspirators is Governor Rotimi Amachi.
“Therefore, we are here to desire many happy returns, we will continue to conspire with you to make sure to minimize poverty and do not use state machinery to arm poverty,” he added.
Although the-Rufai did not agree that politicians are deliberately using poverty as a weapon against people, he accused the electorate of voting for people without the ability to change the fortune of the country.
“Then, here we (Ameachi and I) are again together because Nigeria is in his biggest problems since 1914. We are working together, conspiring to build a coalition to take Nigeria to the track because he is out of the track,” he said.
In addition, he explained: “I do not believe it. Poverty is allowed if it is allowed to exist. That is what has happened in Nigeria. I do not believe that politicians are so intelligent even to sit and arm poverty.
“For me, after having been in the private sector and public service and having been a great observer of our political deterioration, I believe that the problem we have, which I believe that the Babanid governor refers, is that we only obtain incompetent people and we deliver the leadership to them.
“They don't know what to do. Most of them really don't know what to do. They simply know how to grab power, but they don't know what to do with him.”
He then challenged the electorate to vote only for those with the ability to advance in Nigeria, saying: “I think that the key challenge for Nigerians in 2027 is really to see those who offer themselves for leadership and choose those who have competition, capacity, ability and commitment to make Nigeria advance.”
Also speaking at the event, Kano's emir, Malam Muhammadu Sanusi II, has said that many members of the Nigeria elite are out of contact with the reality of poverty in the country.
This was just when he declared that true leadership must be rooted in empathy and service to people.
Sanusi said it was not until he became Emir that he saw first -hand the harsh conditions in which many Nigerians live.
According to him, “many of the elite in Nigeria do not know what poverty is. As an economist, former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), I see the numbers. I did not know poverty until I became emir.
“You go to town and see the water they drink, the houses where they live, the classrooms of two blocks without roofs.”
Then he asked: “Do we love people or do we simply love the decision about them? What are our priorities?”
He added: “We make general expenses and underground steps for ourselves in cities, while in rural areas they cannot reach hospitals; we are in crisis.” How do we go? “It should be our approach.”
For his part, the celebrant, Amachi, thanked his guests for coming, noting that he deliberately chose the theme “Poverty weapon as an underdevelopment medium: a case study by Nigeria”.
The former transport minister regretted that there was too hungry on earth, a development that saddens his heart.
Amaechi accused the masses to stop voting for leaders based on religion or ethnic origin, but credibility people who will bring development to Nigeria.
In addition to the speech, a former executive secretary of the National Health Insurance Plan (NHIS), Professor Usman Yusuf, declared that many problems treated in Nigerian hospitals are not doctors, but are derived from deeper social and economic problems.
He blamed the country's generalized poverty for corruption and poor governance, warning that nothing would change unless citizens assume responsibility at the polls.
“Unless citizens fulfill their responsibilities and vote for what is correct,” said Yusuf, “we will continue to face the same challenges.”
The event was attended by former governors, ministers, Chief of Army personnel, head of the Air Force personnel among many others.
