A letter written by a titanic passenger before the ship's sinking has been sold for a record of £ 300,000 ($ 400,000) in an auction in the United Kingdom.
The letter from Colonel Archibald Gracie was bought by an anonymous buyer at Henry Aldridge and his auction house in Wiltshire on Sunday, reaching a price five times higher than the £ 60,000 that he was expected to get.
The letter has been described as “prophetic”, since it registers Colonel Gracie telling an acquaintance who “would wait for the end of my trip” before issuing a judgment on the “brief ship.”
On April 10, 1912, the day he approached the Titanic in Southampton, the letter was written five days before the ship hit an iceberg in the North Atlantic and sink.
Colonel Gracie was one of the approximately 2,200 passengers and the crew on board Titanic, which was sailing to New York. More than 1,500 lives were lost in the disaster.
The first -class passenger wrote the letter of Cabin C51, and was published when the ship docked in Queenstown, Ireland, on April 11, 1912. It was also Plaza de London on April 12.

The auctioneer who facilitated the sale said that the letter had attracted the highest price of any written correspondence aboard the Titanic.
The story of Colonel Gracie of the sinking is among the best known, and later wrote the book The Truth about the titanic, remembering his experiences aboard the condemned transatlantic.
He reported how he survived when pulling a lifeboat overturned in the frozen waters. He wrote more than half of the men who had originally reached the lifeboat of exhaustion or cold.
Although Colonel Gracie survived the sinking, his health was severely affected by hypothermia and injuries he suffered. He fell into a coma on December 2, 1912 and died of diabetes complications two days later.
