The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Kwara State Chapter, has condemned the violent attack on worshipers of Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), Eruku, in Ekiti Local Government Area, describing it as a wicked, barbaric and disgusting assault that offends both humanity and divinity.
The incident, which occurred during a revival service, resulted in the murder of several worshipers and the kidnapping of others, an attack that CAN says marks the first of such magnitude in recent history in the state.
In a press release signed on Wednesday by the CAN State Chairman, Bishop Sunday Adewole and Secretary, Apostle Shina Ibiyemi, he said the invasion of the church “is an affront to God, an attack on the entire Christian community and a violation of our collective peace and freedom of worship.”
The association expressed grief over the tragedy and called on the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) and other security agencies to immediately locate the perpetrators and ensure the safe rescue of all kidnapped victims.
CAN also urged security agents to intensify surveillance and protect the community to prevent a recurrence.
According to the statement, Kwara CAN leaders have approached the state government, the commissioner of police and other security stakeholders to demand urgent intervention. The national leadership of the CAN has also been notified and stands in solidarity with the state chapter.
The State President, Bishop Sunday Adewole, and State Secretary, Apostle Shina Ibiyemi, paid a condolence visit to Eruku and met with local church leaders and community stakeholders. During the visit, they prayed for the families of the victims and for peace to return to the troubled community.
“To the Christian community in Eruku, you are not alone. We are with you in your pain, suffering and agony. We pray for the safe return of all the kidnapped people and for God’s healing and protection on earth,” the statement read.
CAN called on Christians across Kwara State to remain calm, vigilant, prayerful and united as security efforts continue.
