The Canadian government has implemented a significant change in its work permit rules, allowing foreign workers to change jobs without waiting for permission.
This new Canada approach is designed to offer greater flexibility, reduce processing times and benefit both workers and employers.
According to BBC, temporary public policy allows eligible foreigners to start working in new positions immediately after submitting a job permit application. This eliminates the previous restrictions that often led to expensive employment gaps and slowed work transitions.
The objective of policy is to minimize unemployment periods, facilitate professional mobility for foreign workers, accelerate the hiring process for companies and improve the financial well -being of temporary workers in Canada.
Eligible groups under the new policy
The policy reviewed on Canadian work permits applies to the following three categories of foreign workers:
Workers with “maintained state”
These are people whose work permits have expired but have already submitted renewal requests.
According to the previous rules, these workers were limited to the terms of their expired permits and could not change employers. Updated policy now allows you to start new jobs while waiting for the result of your renewal application.
Valid work permits holders looking for a new role
Foreign citizens with valid, specific employer or occupation permits can now transition to a new job just after sending a new job permit application.
This change is especially valuable in cases that involve loss of employment, better employment opportunities or concerns with current workplaces.
Previously exempt workers who now need permission
Some people who were previously in work permit now require one, due to work changes or employer.
These workers are also covered by politics and can start working as soon as the new application is presented, without waiting for the final approval.
This temporal measure is applied to the positions offered through the following programs:
Temporary Foreign Workers Program (TFWP)
International Mobility Program (IMP)
As long as there is a valid job offer and a corresponding job permit application has been submitted in one of these programs, the worker can begin employment without delay.
How to use New Canada's work permit
To benefit from this updated policy, foreign workers must follow these three steps:
Get a genuine job offer from a Canadian employer. Send a new job permit request linked to that offer. Start working on the new role immediately: it is not necessary to wait for immigration, refugees and citizens Canada (IRCC) to finish permission.
Before this update, foreign workers in Canada had to wait for the total approval of a new permit before changing work or roles, which often led to prolonged employment gaps, financial tension and slower hiring for employers.
