Nigerian-born cartoonist and illustrator Tayo Fatunla has brought his art to an international audience with an outdoor exhibition titled ‘Tayo Cartoon Extravaganza’ at Limoges International Airport in central-western France.
The exhibition, which concluded on Thursday, October 30, showcased a curated selection of Fatunla’s cartoons, exploring themes such as African identity, global politics, conflict, hunger and human resilience.
Fatunla’s artistic journey began early, with his first cartoon published in Apolo, a children’s magazine, when he was a teenager.
He continued to contribute to prominent Nigerian newspapers before becoming a full-time cartoonist at Punch Newspapers.
Over the decades, his work has appeared in major international outlets such as the Washington Post, the Christian Science Monitor, BBC Focus on Africa and The Guardian.
The exhibition, organized in collaboration with the Saint-Just-le-Martel Cartoon Festival and Limoges International Airport, featured satirical works on topics such as the conflict between Israel and Hamas, the anniversaries of Nigeria’s independence and the war in Sudan.
Fatunla’s art has been exhibited at the Saint-Just-le-Martel festival for over 25 years, earning her the prestigious International Press Porcelain Pencil Award in 2001.
The cartoonist’s creative journey is marked by his ability to combine African storytelling with universal themes, which resonate deeply across cultures.
