The Chinese city of Qingdao says it plans to screen its entire population of more than nine million people for the new coronavirus in five days.
Health authorities said Monday that about a dozen new infections were detected over the weekend in the eastern coastal city.
Most of the new infections were hospital-related.
He added that more than 140,000 people, mainly working in the healthcare sector, were screened immediately after the first positive cases of COVID-19 emerged.
Recently, China has only recorded coronavirus infections imported from abroad.
The country controlled the spread of the virus with tough measures such as blocking cities where millions live, strict isolation and a ban on entry.
There have been several limited localized COVID-19 outbreaks, such as now in Qingdao, but they have quickly stopped. Massive tests were also used in those cases.
