The president of the Independent Corrupt Commission and other related offenses (ICPC), Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, has asked the National Assembly to accelerate the approval of the bill of complainants.
According to Aliyu, the denunciation bill of complainants will train citizens to inform corruption without fear of being intimidated or risking their lives.
The ICRC chief declared this in a one -day commitment to media practitioners selected in the northwest and northeast of the state of Kano.
He said: “Many journalists and citizens were afraid to give useful information to the Anti-Injoice Agency, because there are no adequate laws or application that protect their lives.
“The Nigerians were ready to give vital information against corruption, but people needed to have a guarantee of their lives.
“If there is a holistic law that provides adequate protection of lives and property for journalists and Nigerians, they will be free to inform cases of corruption to appropriate anti-union agencies for adequate prosecution.
“Hence the need for the call to the National Assembly to accelerate the approval of the bill of complainants, which will train citizens to inform corruption without fear.”
Aliyu revealed that the commission had tracked 1,440 projects valued in approximately N271,054 billion in the two areas. Of these, 767 projects worth N112,737 billion were in the Northeast, while 673 projects valued at N158,317 billion were in the northwest.
The Chief of ICPC revealed that cash recoveries in the northwest totaled N7.269 billion, along with $ 1,066 million, while N43.335 million recovered in the northeast. In addition, the assets seized in the northwest included 14 buildings, 25 land plots and three cultivation lands.
According to him, 171 cases were investigated within the period, 117 in the northwest and 54 in the northeast. These led to 16 cases in the Court, with eight from each area, and four sentences registered in both regions.
He said: “A total of 1,440 projects were tracked, valued at approximately N271,054 billion.
“Of these, 767 projects valued at N112,737 billion were in the Northeast, and 673 projects valued at N158,317 billion were in the northwest.
“Our cash recoveries totaled N7.269 billion in the northwest and N43,335 million in the Northeast, with a total of $ 1,066 million also recovered in the northwest.
“We also seize assets in the northwest, including 14 buildings, 25 land plots and three cultivation lands.
“A total of 171 cases were investigated, with 117 in the northwest and 54 in the northeast.
“This led to 16 cases in the Court, with eight from the Northwest and the Northeast. Four sentences were registered in each of the two zones.”
Also speaking on the occasion, Professor Sule Yau Sule of the University of Bayero Kano (BUK) said that media organizations have a crucial role to play in collaboration with the ICPC to tame corruption in the country.
Sule added that the Anti-Injustment agency cannot fight the crusade against corruption, therefore, the need for cooperation and a task to free the country from corruption that threatens the nation.
