After the recent warning of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other regulatory bodies that list the rivers state between the states prone to floods in Nigeria, the state government warned that it would process the criminals of illegal wetland recovery.
The warning reached the light of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) of deployment of equipment in the state of Rivers and other regions at risk to sensitize residents in flood preparation and mitigation measures.
He declared his full support to the Nema initiative and urged all residents, especially those in the communities prone to floods, to take the necessary precautions to safeguard lives and properties.
The Government also reiterated its position against illegal land recovery activities, which exacerbate environmental degradation and worsen flood conditions. “The not approved recovery of wetlands and other ecologically sensitive areas interrupts natural drainage systems, which puts communities at greater risk during heavy rains,” he declared through a statement by Héctor Igbikiowubo, a special senior advisor, means for the state government of the rivers.
He warned that he would not tolerate such activities and take strict legal actions against individuals or guilty organizations.
“The criminals will face the prosecution in accordance with the laws of environmental protection,” the statement added.
He called residents to eliminate drains and avoid seeing waste on river roads; relocate with safer reasons if you reside in flood -prone areas cooperate with emergency response equipment and attend to official notices and report the illegal recovery of the land or other environmental violations to the appropriate authorities.
“The river state government remains committed to protecting the environment and guaranteeing the safety of all residents. We urge everyone to take proactive measures to mitigate the impact of possible floods and comply with environmental regulations,” the statement added.
