The INEC in Rivers state said on Saturday the commission was ready to hold elections in Asari-Toru local government area and Degema local government area 14th district on Sunday.
This was announced by INEC’s Resident Election Commissioner (REC), Johnson Alalibo, in a statement from INEC spokeswoman in Rivers State, Geraldine Ekelemu, in Port Harcourt.
Mr. Alalibo stated that the elections could not be held in the LGAs due to voter resistance to the deployment of election officials and materials for the gubernatorial and state assembly elections.
He said the electorate demanded to see the district polling officer before they allowed the elections to begin at Asari-Toru LGA.

He said that the voters of the 14th district in Degema LGA also demanded that the supervising Presiding Officer must appear at the Center of the Registration Area with check sheets, which prevents the election from being held in the area.
The REC said the Commission had decided to hold the election in the areas on Sunday, based on section 24 of the Electoral Act 2022.
