… As the Committee urges PDP to follow the due process on the southeast replacement demand

Despite the growing pressure within the Democratic Party of the Peoples (PDP) to replace Senator Samuel Anyanwu as his National Secretary, a report sewed by the Nigerian Tribune on Tuesday reveals that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) still recognizes Anyanwu as the national scribe of the duly elected party.

According to the reports, the document presented to the Governors of the PDP by a committee responsible for interacting with the INEC, describes the position of the commission with respect to the state of Anyanwu. The Committee was chaired by the Governor of the State of Taraba, Agbu Kafas, with the Governors Peter Mbah of Enugu, Dauda Lawal de Zamfara and the national legal advisor PDP as members.

According to the findings presented by Governor MBAH, after consultations with INEC officials, the electoral body made it clear that:

“Senator Sam Anyanwu is still recognized as the National Secretary of the PDP, in line with a subsistent judgment of the Supreme Court.

“There is no vacancy declared in the office of the National Secretary, and Anyanwu can only be eliminated through constitutional procedures stipulated by the party.

“Inec should be given a minimum notice of 21 days before calling any meeting that delibrates in the elimination or replacement of a party official.

“The process must strictly comply with the constitution of the PDP and the relevant provisions of the Electoral Law.”

The report is expected to remain unofficial, but it was widely distributed among the main leaders of the party during the 99th Meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) in Abuja, shape the party approach to address internal agitation continues from the southeast zone.

In recent months, the leaders of the Southeast PDP Caucus have demanded the elimination of Anyanwu, citing alleged antiparty activities during the 2023 IMO state governor elections, where he ran as a candidate of the party, but was accused of working against his broader interest.

Since then, the area has nominated a replacement and has presented its recommendation to party leadership.

However, in the light of the current INEC position, the Committee advised the PDP governors forum to guarantee that all the necessary procedures are followed, including the formal recognition of the Southeast application in NEC and schedule the matter for formal deliberation at the next meeting, scheduled for June 30.

The resolution of the committee, as contained in the report, is read in part:

“The procedure and processes [should] Be followed to complete the acceptance of the recommendation of the Southeast Caucus to rest the agitation and re -head to the party in the southeast. In addition, the NEC party should recognize the application/recommendation of the southeast Caucus of being considered at the next meeting, among other things. “

The issue of Anyanwu's position was briefly referenced during the NEC meeting on Tuesday.

In the statement after the meeting read by the president of the Ambassador of the Interim National President, Iliya Damagum, it was confirmed that the resolution of the General Executive Committee of the Southeast “was received” and “will be considered and deliberate in the next NEC”.

Senator Anyanwu, former member of the National Assembly, has not publicly commented on the impulse of its elimination.

However, PDP experts suggest that the problem could shape the tone and bets of the NEC meeting of June 30, which can become essential to determine the direction of the party in the southeast and beyond.
