Commercial motorcyclists, also known as okada motorcyclists, have been told to register with the Ogun state government by October 1, 2021.

State police public relations officer Abimbola Oyeyemi, in an interactive session on Monday, revealed that banned okada riders in Lagos state have been moving to Ogun en masse.

This, he said, required the government to create a database for motorcyclists operating in the Gateway state to checkmate the security challenges facing the state.

According to Oyeyemi, the government had informed the leaders of all motorcyclist unions in okada a few months ago of its determination to enforce the registration of all motorcyclists to curb crime and criminality.

While he said that the state had no plan to ban okada riders as was done in Lagos, Oyeyemi stated that “it must have the proper documentation of all okada riders, to form a database, so as not to bring Unnecessary security threats to the state of Ogun. “

He reported that the database would give security agencies the actual number of cyclists in Ogun, their areas of residence, names and registration numbers.

After the search, the police spokesman added that they would be given reflective vests, with numbers inscribed on the vests.

“If someone commits a crime using Okada anywhere in the state, we can quickly identify who is really responsible for that crime,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Consultant, Commercial Motorcyclist Identification Scheme (COMORIS), Mr. Juwon Adebanjo, hinted that more than 40,000 motorcycles would be registered in Ogun through the scheme.

Adebanjo revealed that around 5,000 registration points have been established in the 20 local government areas of the state.
