Kaduna Assembly recommends trial of El-Rufai’ over state loan burden

The Kaduna State House of Assembly has recommended the prosecution of the immediate past governor of the state, Nasir El-Rufai, for alleged abuse of power and money laundering.

El-Rufai was governor for two terms between 2015 and 2023.

Lawmakers said their decision followed an investigation by the ad hoc committee created by the House, headed by Henry Zacharia.

The report presented by Zacharia during Wednesday’s plenary session criticized the El-Rufai administration for the multi-million naira loans it obtained for the State.

The report alleges that the loans were not used for their intended purposes and, in some cases, due process was not followed in obtaining the loans.

“Therefore, the committee recommended investigation and prosecution of the former governor and some other accused members of his cabinet by security and anti-corruption agencies for abuse of power by awarding contracts without due process, diversion of funds public and money laundering,” the report states.
