… calls for greater security and ethics in the media in a Congressional meeting

The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kano State Council, has announced the suspension of its secretary, Abubakar Shehu Kwaru, following allegations of administrative violations and misappropriation of funds.

The decision was made on Saturday during the second meeting of the council congress held in Kano.

According to the statement issued at the end of the congress and signed by the President of the Council, Comrade Suleiman Abdullahi Dederi, and the Acting Secretary, Hauwa Suleiman Zaharaddeen, the suspension is intended to allow a thorough investigation by the Ethics and Disciplinary Committee.

The Congress also commended the Kano State Government for its continued investment in security, particularly the prioritization of security in the 2026 budget and the recent donation of vehicles and motorcycles to the Nigerian Army.

He, however, urged security agencies to intensify efforts to ensure a safer Kano.

On sports development, the union called for a complete review of the Kano Pillars Football Club to restore its organizational strength and preserve its legacy as one of the most successful football teams in Nigeria.

The NUJ further expressed its gratitude to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for ensuring freedom of the press and allowing journalists to work without intimidation.

He also commended the Commissioner for Information and Home Affairs, Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, for establishing the League of Veteran Journalists and strengthening relations among media professionals.

Regarding professional ethics, the union advised media executives and journalists to maintain high standards, particularly in translation, pronunciation of names, titles and places.

He warned journalists against content that glorifies banditry and urged strict compliance with the Nigerian Code of Ethics for Journalists.

The congress also called on the State Fire Service to intensify public awareness campaigns and preventive measures in all communities.

Furthermore, NUJ Kano applauded his leadership under Comrade Dederi for organizing the 2025 Press Week in accordance with the union constitution.

He further acknowledged the Director General of Media and Communications to the Governor, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, for compensating the medical bills of veteran journalist Mallam Lawan Isah Bagwai and supporting other sick members.

The statement was drafted by a committee chaired by Comrade Uba Abdullahi, with Abdullahi Muhammad as member and Abbas Yusha’u Yusuf as secretary.
