Lessons from the Osun election must inform our preparations for 2027 – INEC

The president of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)Prof. Joash Amupitan, has said the Osun State gubernatorial election is a milestone that should shape the commission’s planning for the 2027 general elections.

This was stated on Sunday when formally closing the #OsunDecides2026 Situation Room, after the conclusion of the elections and the declaration of results in the early hours of the day.

He congratulated INEC staff at national, state and local government levels, as well as field staff and technical teams, for their dedication, sacrifice and professionalism throughout the process.

The President noted that many staff worked long hours, sacrificed time with their families and worked under demanding conditions to ensure that the elections were carried out successfully and the integrity of the process was protected.

He also attributed the peaceful conduct of the vote to “the grace and protection of Almighty God.”

He urged staff to maintain a higher level of vigilance, transparency, professionalism and commitment, and to remain strictly neutral in the performance of their duties.

The INEC Chairman further called on staff to recognize the vital role the Commission plays in maintaining Nigeria’s democracy.

“Let us learn from our experience, refine our strategies and approach the next national task with renewed vigor and absolute neutrality. Let us remain steadfast in our duty, knowing that we are the guardians of our nation’s democracy,” he said.

With that, Professor Amupitan formally declared the #OsunDecides2026 Situation Room closed, ending the central monitoring and supervision operations of the Osun gubernatorial election commission.
