A regulatory body responsible for ensuring standards in medical and dental education and practice in Nigeria, the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), has approved the Federal Medical Centre, Ikole-Ekiti, Ekiti State, for housekeeping training.
Accreditation would allow the healthcare facility to attract top medical talent and provide housekeeping training to medical graduates to gain hands-on experience in their field.
The Hospital was accredited for its state-of-the-art facilities, equipment and technology, adequate patient load to provide diverse learning experiences, structured training programs aligning with MDCN guidelines, training capacity, conducive training environment, adequate supervision and mentoring by experienced medical professionals, effective record keeping and evaluation systems to monitor among others.
After examining the Hospital facilities, the seven-man MDCN team led by its Deputy Secretary, Dr. Nnaemeka Nwakanma, applauded the rapid transformation of the FMC, while urging its management and consultants to maintain high standards as the center progresses on its path to becoming a full-fledged training institution.
Nwakanma described FMC Ikole-Ekiti as a model of pioneering excellence, noting that the hospital had already attracted an impressive array of specialists despite its recent promotion from secondary to tertiary level.
The Deputy Secretary commended the Chief Medical Officer, Professor Dare Ogunlusi, the consultants and the management team for their dedication, saying the progress recorded in such a short period reflects strong leadership and unity of purpose.
He praised the hospital for becoming “a magnet for super specialists in Ekiti and neighboring states”, and encouraged the management to maintain its strategies to continue attracting medical experts.
The expert also highlighted the need to maintain global standards in medical education, noting that Nigeria’s medical training system currently enjoys considerable international recognition.
He added: “There are not many hospitals at this level of operation that maintain the level of cleanliness that I have seen at FMC Ikole-Ekiti. This shows that the hospital has a culture of maintaining a clean and serene environment. “There is no point in patients coming to the hospital and returning home with nosocomial infections arising from poor hygiene in the hospital.
“But we’ve seen that you’ve made a good effort and it doesn’t look like that’s something you did today. It obviously looks like that all the time and it’s something we praise quite a bit.”
“So, my team has just told me to inform you that the Federal Medical Center Ikole-Ekiti has now been accredited as a Housewife Training Centre.”
In his response, the Medical Director, Professor Ogunlusi, expressed deep appreciation for the support the center has received, noting that most of its ongoing projects are funded through Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), reaffirming the hospital’s commitment to providing quality healthcare.
Ogunlusi stressed that the well-being of staff and the provision of patient-centred services remain the top priorities of the hospital, stressing that the FMC, Ikole-Ekiti maintains strict standards of cleanliness and professionalism, ensuring that patients are treated with respect and dignity.
He pledged that the Hospital would continue to maintain the highest level of professionalism in the provision of quality healthcare for the betterment of humanity.
Recall that the Ikole-Ekiti FMC was established through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Ekiti State Government in July 2024; and went from being a state specialized hospital to a federal medical center.
The Health center offers services such as Internal Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Emergency Care, Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, Endocrinology, Ophthalmology, Pulmonology, Cardiology, Joint Replacement, Gastroenterology, Dental Services among others.
