Flights have resumed at Munich airport after drone sightings forced the second most friendly airport in Germany to suspend operations for the second time in 24 hours.
The airport said the flights stopped at 21:30 local time (20:30 GMT) on Friday, affecting around 6,500 passengers. At least 17 flights connected to the ground the previous day after the drones were seen near the airfield.
Munich’s airport said on Saturday morning that operations had “gradually resumed,” but warned passengers of current delays.
Travelers were urged to verify flight updates before heading to the airport.
The authorities have not identified where the drones came from or who operated them. The reports in Belgium said that 15 drones were seen on the Elsenborn military site near the German border before crossing German airspace and being seen by the police in Düren.
The German Minister of Germany, Alexander Dobrindt, said he would raise the issue of Anti-Drone defenses at a meeting of European Interior Ministers and plans to accelerate the legislation that allows the police to request military aid to demolish drones.
The last incident occurs in the midst of an increase in drone sightings throughout Europe. Airports in Copenhagen and Oslo have also suspended flights after drones were detected near restricted areas.
European leaders gathered in Copenhagen this week to discuss a coordinated response, including a “drone wall” proposed to detect and destroy hostile drones.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that the frequency of airspace incursions was increasing, qualifying “reasonable assuming that drones come from Russia.”
Moscow has denied participation, and the Danish authorities say there is no evidence to link Russia with incidents.
Speaking in Sochi on Thursday, the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, dismissed the claims with a joke: “I will not do it again. I will not do it again, not to France, Denmark or Copenhagen.”
