The Nobel Prize in Physics 2025 has been awarded to three scientists from the United Kingdom, France and the United States for their innovative research on quantum mechanics.
John Clarke, British physicist at the University of California, Berkeley; Michel Devoret, a French physicist at Yale University; and John Martinis of the University of California, Santa Barbara, will share the prize of 11 million Swedish Kronor (£ 871,400), announced by the Royal Academy of Sciences of Sweden in Stockholm.
The three physicists led experiments that show how quantum effects on everyday systems can appear. His research showed that quantum properties, usually only seen at the atomic level, can have practical and measurable results in the real world.
One of its key achievements was to develop a superconductive electrical system capable of tunnels from one physical state to another. This effect, often described as similar to a ball that passes directly through a wall instead of bouncing backwards, became a vital step towards new technologies.
Their discoveries have opened the door to advances in quantum cryptography, quantum computing and quantum detection, the fields that now drive much of modern physical research.
Speaking at a press conference, Professor Clarke, who received news from the award by phone, said: “To put it softly, it was the surprise of my life.”
