As part of an effort to promote menstrual hygiene among girls in Ogun State, no less than 10,000 would benefit from the free sanitary pad programme.
This was revealed by the wife of the state governor, Mrs. Bamidele Abiodun, on Tuesday, at the commencement of the exercise, held at the June 12 Cultural Centre, Kuto, Abeokuta.
Mrs. Abiodun explained that the program is being carried out under the Renewed Hope Initiative ‘Flow with Confidence’ initiated by Senator Oluremi Tinubu.
He informed that the distribution of free sanitary pads to girls in the state is a vital menstrual health intervention, designed to empower school girls by promoting knowledge, dignity and confidence through better menstrual hygiene.
“In today’s modern world, no girl should miss school because she cannot afford sanitary products.
“It is unacceptable that our girls continue to face significant challenges during their menstrual cycle, especially those in rural communities, who miss school days every month because they cannot afford sanitary pads.
“Some who attend turn to unsafe and unhygienic alternatives, while others stay home, falling behind in their studies and, in some cases, ending up dropping out of school.
“This trend must end, and this intervention, under the Renewed Hope Education Initiative, aims to do just that,” he added.
The Ogun First Lady revealed that a total of 370,000 free sanitary pads would be distributed to school girls in rural communities across the country.
Abiodun said all states and the Federal Capital Territory will receive 10,000 packets each through the state First Ladies and RHI Coordinators for distribution to girls in rural communities and those who cannot afford sanitary pads.
Mrs Abiodun said: “Today I will deliver over 10,000 packets of disposable sanitary pads for distribution to 10,000 deserving girls in rural communities across Ogun State.
“Each beneficiary will receive a one-year supply of sanitary pads. We chose disposable sanitary pads because they offer a simple and hygienic option that offers better health benefits for women’s reproductive well-being.”
He advised the beneficiaries to make good use of the pads and not sell them, while appealing to the presidents of the town councils to ensure the success of the intervention.
“This is for you, make the most of it and don’t sell the pads. Stay in school, study hard, support each other and never let shame or stigma take away your confidence.
“Take this opportunity to courageously pursue your dreams, because you are the future of this nation and I believe in you,” he added.
