Oyo is on the way to achieving a record of 100 billion in internally generated income (IGR), after the successful implementation of reforms in the key sectors by the administration of Governor Seyi Makinde.
The State Information Commissioner, Prince Dotun Oyelade, confirmed that Oyo has been classified as the best place to live in Nigeria during the past year, according to the quality of life, infrastructure, the provision of services and security. The classification comes from the State Performance Index (PSPI), administered by an independent consulting.
According to Oyelade, the IGR of the State has seen a dramatic improvement in recent years.
“While the previous administration fought to generate ₦ 15 billion annually, the administration of Governor Makinde increased IGR to ₦ 65 billion in 2024. As of July 2025, the State had already generated ₦ 58 billion, only ₦ ₦ ₦ 7 billion of last total,” he said.

He pointed out that with this trajectory, the State is ready to overcome its own registration by the end of the year, potentially reaching ₦ 100 billion and establish itself as one of Nigeria’s main financial centers.
Unlike many other subnational governments, Oyo’s income has not reached the expense of investors. Oyelade explained that the increase in IGR has been achieved without placing an additional load for companies. Instead, administration has stimulated economic growth through strategic investments in agribusiness, infrastructure and tourism.
An important taxpayer to this growth is the monthly salary invoice of ₦ 11.9 billion paid to more than 130,000 workers. This month (September), the State paid ₦ 15.4 billion in salaries, a significant increase that reflects the government’s commitment to economic stimulation through regular salary payments.
In the health sector, Oyelade highlighted the improvement of 264 primary medical care centers and the recruitment of more than 3,900 health professionals. These efforts, he said, have significantly revitalized the state health benefit system.
He also referred to a recent visit from the representative of the UNICEF country, Celine Lafocriere, who said that the state of Oyo has registered the highest level of commitment to UNICEF among all Nigerian states in the last two years.
In education, the commissioner revealed that the strength of staff in primary schools has doubled from 13,730 in 2019 to 26,436 in 2025. In addition, more than 10,500 teaching and non -teaching employees have been hired to support learning results and improve youth development.
The educational reforms of Governor Makinde have also led to the construction of 60 model schools, the construction of 289 new classroom blocks, the renewal of another 229 and the reintegration of more than 60,000 children outside the school to the system.
To improve administrative efficiency, four new educational areas have been established along with their support structures, while 2,000 new teachers have been used through TESCOM.
Oyelade concluded that these strategic reforms in finance, health and education are clear indicators of Governor Makinde’s commitment to sustainable development and the best quality of life for all residents of Oyo.
