Confirm 2 dead, 2 police stations destroyed

By Egufe Yafugborhi – Port Harcourt

Rivers State Police Commissioner (CP) Joseph Mukan has accused the outlawed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) of being the masterminds of Wednesday’s armed attack that left two policemen dead and two police stations razed.

Mukan, counting his Command’s losses during the development on Thursday, said that violent IPOB members disguised as #ENDSARS protesters attacked four police formations in different parts of the state.

He said: “10/21/2020 at approximately 9:30 p.m., thugs, some 500 alleged members of the outlawed IPOB invaded the Oyigbo Area Command, the Oyigbo and Afam Police Stations, setting them on fire and damaging some fifteen vehicles, including an Armored Personnel Carrier (APC).

“Two policemen died and the thugs took some weapons and ammunition. In another attack on the Mile 1 Police Station, the same violent members of IPOB under the guise of #ENDSARS Protests made a frantic attempt to burn down the police station and the Eagle Crack Squad office.

“However, they were repelled by the superior firepower of the Police, since three of them were fatally wounded in the exchange of shots, while eight (8) of them were arrested and immediately transferred to the state CID where currently they are assisting in our investigation.

“We have been able to stabilize the Command, although there are still pockets of threats from its remnants in the marginal communities in the Oyigbo Local Government Area (LGA), but no stone will be left unturned until they are arrested and brought to justice.”

CP Mukan appealed to the population of Rivers to remain calm and religiously obey the curfew imposed by the State Government which, he pointed out, may have its concomitant drawbacks, but in good faith and with the general interest of the citizenry. .

He said: “Adequate deployments have been made to cover all hotspots and ensure that thugs are kept at arm’s length. We call on parents and guardians to warn their children to respect the law; otherwise, the full weight of the law will fall on them.

Rivers has recently enjoyed a fragile peace that we are prepared to maintain. The state is larger than any one person or group, so we must all strive for lasting peace. The #ENDSARS protests and Consequential Lawsuits are being attended by the Federal and State Governments, therefore, any attempt to undermine the security of the State will be resisted ”.

CP Mukan said his Command will not be dissuaded from its constitutional duty to protect lives and property in the most professional manner, as well as made available hotlines for members of the public to report any perceived security threats across the state.
