Police launched a massive search following a shooting at Brown University on Saturday that left two people dead and nine others injured.
The attack occurred in the Barus & Holley Engineering and Physics Building, where multiple exams were being held, according to university officials and Providence Mayor Brett Smiley.
Authorities released video of a “person of interest” seen leaving the building in dark clothing, urging anyone with information to come forward. Witnesses reported that the suspect may have fled on foot, possibly wearing a camouflage mask, although this has not been confirmed.
In response, students and residents near the campus were locked down, with doors locked and movement restricted. More than 400 officers were deployed to assist with the investigation and maintain security in the area.
Brown University President Christina Paxson described the day as deeply devastating.
He confirmed that the first victims were students and noted that one of the nine injured was injured by fragments, not gunshots. He added that all victims are currently receiving intensive care at Rhode Island Hospital.
ABC News reports that Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee called the incident unthinkable and pledged full support to authorities and the victims’ families.
The FBI has also launched a tip line for anyone with information related to the shooting, ABC News reports.
