President Tinubu addresses Nigerians as hunger protests continue

Must Read

President Bola Tinubu will address the nation on Sunday, August 4, 2024 via a televised broadcast, the presidency said.

The broadcast will air at 7:00 am that day, according to a statement by the President's Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale.

“Television, radio and other electronic media channels are urged to connect to the network services of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) for transmission,” Ngelale said.

“The broadcast will be repeated on the NTA and FRCN network services at 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. on the same day.”

Protests against bad governance across the country are now in their third day. Deaths, violence, looting, destruction of public and private property and police brutality have accompanied the demonstrations across the country.

Amnesty International has said at least 13 people have so far been killed by security officers, an allegation the police have denied. Police spokesman Olumuyiwa Adejobi has put the death toll at seven but has blamed terrorists, a local vigilante and a reckless driver for the deaths.

Amid the confusion in some parts of the country, some people have called on the president to address the nation to respond to the protesters' grievances.
