Members of the House of Representatives will this week debate a motion calling for urgent medical intervention for the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
The resolution followed an intervention during Tuesday’s plenary session by the Vice President, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, who reacting to a point of order raised on the issue by the member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency, Hon. Obi Aguocha, notified the House that it will be properly presented for hearing within a week.
Honorable. Aguocha had raised a point of order (Order 6, Rule 2 on matters of privilege), stating that he is yet to receive a response to the letter dated August 27, 2025 that he wrote to the Speaker, President Bola Tinubu and Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) to request urgent medical intervention for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, whose health is allegedly deteriorating.

Honorable. Aguocha, who was visibly angered by the development, explained that the lawmakers who wrote the letter “requested a certain action, which was to intervene in the medical condition of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.”
When asked to withdraw the motion, the Hon. Aguocha maintained that the issue at stake “is a matter of life or death.”
He explained that: “A letter to Mr. President for a request for urgent intervention in the deteriorating health conditions of my constituent, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. As of today, Mr. President, I have yet to receive any response from Mr. President, Mr. President and the Attorney General despite the deteriorating health of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, who has been evaluated by his own team of doctors and produced a report that is attached to the letter. which was presented to Mr. Speaker, the President and also the Attorney General.
“The Nigerian Medical Association has conducted a second assessment and the results further confirm this.
“Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s health is deteriorating, he has organ deficiencies, low potassium levels and as we speak, he is on the verge of death.
“Mr President, following the instructions of the court, the court ordered that within eight days the Nigerian Medical Association should also do its own assessment.
“So now there are three reports, Mr. President. They all go in the same direction. I quote the judge. The judge says that only a man who is alive and alive can be tried. Mr. President, this is not politics or anything else, but it is a fundamental human right that must be attributed to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
“Most people who fall into that gap have been given the opportunity to even travel abroad to seek medical care.
“Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has not been convicted of any crime in Nigeria. I must be protected by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. So, Mr. President, a lot of progress has been made for the government to do the right thing so that we can allow Mazi Nnamdi Kanu the urgent treatment that he needs. It is significant, Mr. President.
In his reaction, President Abbas Tajudeen urged Hon. Aguocha to resign and present the matter properly another legislative day, as it was under the wrong House Rules.
Corroborating, the Vice President, although highlighting that the issue presented is important, assured the President that the motion will be duly presented to the House during the course of the week.
Honorable. Kalu said: “Mr Speaker, I am also from Abia State. As for the issue raised by my colleague, we will properly present it before the House in the course of the week.
“We will properly appear before the House so that it is given the proper hearing. I request you to grant us the hearing perhaps tomorrow or next morning.”
Ruling on the issue, spokesperson Tajudeen said: “There is no problem, it is only the procedure that you were questioning, not the substance of the matter. We will be ready and willing to give you all the time to present.“
