Responsibility, transparency key to restore investor confidence – Sec DG

The general director of the Bag and Securities Commission (SEC), Dr. Emomotimi Agama, has underlined the role of responsibility and transparency as critical promoters of investor confidence in the Nigeria capital market.

Dr. Agama announced this by delivering a message of goodwill in a commitment of interested parties on internal control over financial information in the public sector, held in Abuja.

The event, with the theme “Strengthening of accounting and transparency through the ICRC”, was organized by Smith Ighodalo Adewale Odiachi (SIAO) Partners in collaboration with the Financial Information Council (FRC).

According to the head of the SEC, the robust mechanisms of internal control over financial information are vital to guarantee market integrity and promote trust among investors.

“Internal control over our financial reports is a critical part of disseminations. Either in the stock market, for public companies or other organizations, these controls strengthen responsibility, transparency and integrity within the financial system,” he said.

In addition, he emphasized that investor confidence is directly linked to how transparent and responsible are market institutions and operators.

“For investors, what matters is to know that there is responsibility, that people are doing what they should do, and the administration is being confirmed. When investors see that management is committed to these principles, it is more likely to invest,” Agama explained.

Dr. Agama also highlighted the recent approval of the Investment and Securities Law (ISA) 2025, signed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on March 25, describing it as a milestone in the reform of the capital market.

“ISA 2025 has introduced key reforms aimed at promoting a more transparent and efficient market. We are already seeing a better feeling of investors and greater confidence in the system,” he said.

By reaffirming the SEC’s commitment to professionalism and strict adhesion to the law, Agama said the Commission would continue to strengthen regulatory supervision to ensure that the Nigerian capital market remains credible, transparent and globally competitive.
