The Pan-African Dialogue Institute (TPADI) has asked the Federal Government of Nigeria to officially recognize on May 25, known worldwide as Africa Day, as a national holiday, in an attempt to restore the continental visibility of Nigeria and reinforce its leadership role in the Pan-African unit.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja to commemorate the Day of Africa 2025, the president of TPADI, Dr. Effiong Joseph Udo, emphasized the importance of the day, which marks the foundation of the organization of the African Unity (OAU) in 1963, now the African Union (AU).
He described the day of Africa as a “living symbol of African liberation, unity and collective responsibility” and urged Nigeria to institutionalize it as other African countries, including South Africa, Ghana, Zambia and Ethiopia.
“Despite Nigeria's proud legacy to support African liberation movements and regional cooperation, the country has not yet given the formal recognition of Africa Day,” said Dr. Udo.
“This omission is symbolic and decreases Nigeria's position as a lighthouse of Pan -Africanism,” he added.
Dr. Udo presented TPADI as a group of non -political and inclusive Pan -African experts based at the University of Uyo, with members of more than 25 African countries and the diaspora.
The organization is dedicated to education, the defense of policies and the implementation of the project with an focus on promoting unity, cultural pride and development throughout the continent through dialogue.
“Pan -Africanism is not just a political rhetoric. It is also about celebrating our art, music, culture, business, nature and everything that defines our identity as Africans,” he said.
TPADI launched its first observance of the Day of Africa in Nigeria in 2024, celebrating an important international dialogue conference at the University of Uyo, attended by global dignitaries, including former Vice President of Gambia, Mrs. Fatumata Tambajang.
This year, the Institute organized a National Web and Media Seminar to campaign for the recognition of vacations and plans to continue activities with cultural exhibitions and educational exhibitions in UYO.
Dr. Udo asked the ministries of the key government, including national information and guidance, art, culture and creative economy, education and tourism, to work together to include Africa's day in school plans and public campaigns.
He also appealed to civil society, academia, creative industries and the private sector to join the cause.
Citing the African proverbs and Pan -African visionaries such as Kwame Nkrumah, Dr. Udo concluded: “Let Nigeria rise not only as the giant of Africa, but as the soul of the future of Africa. If we can commemorate World Malaria Day and World AIDS Day, why not Africa day?”
