The federal government has been urged to accelerate action in the elimination of sexual violence related to the conflict in the country.
A defender of sexual and gender violence in the state of Kogi, Mrs. Joyce Ajifa Haruna, gave the position in a message to commemorate this year's international day for the elimination of sexual violence in the conflict in Lokoja.
Speaking about the importance of the day, Joyce Haruna explained that the day was left aside not only to raise awareness but to honor survivors of sexual violence and pay tribute to those who have lost their lives worldwide while facing crimes.
Mrs. Haruna, who argued that despite generalized consciousness and condemnation, the scourge still continues throughout the world, appealed to governments at the national and subnational levels to ensure that charges related to sexual violence against perpetrators are thoroughly investigated.
He described sexual violence in the conflict as a crime that silence the voices, pointing out that it deepens when those who speak are not qualified and those who perpetrate the crimes are unpunished.
The gender -based defender argued that sexual violence related to conflict is a devastating form of attack and repression, which has lasting and harmful effects on physical, sexual, reproductive and mental health of survivors, and destroys the social fabric of communities.
While underlines the importance of effective action to end the impunity of sexual violence related to conflict in the country, Mrs. Haruna asked Nigerians to join to end the negligible crime, demand justice for survivors and maintain efforts to end the cycle of violence.
He also urged victims to speak, noting that silence encourages perpetrators to continue committing crime.
