In a significant step towards improving governance and improving the welfare of citizens, the governor of Cross River, Senator Bassey Edet Otu, has signed three historical bills.
The recently promulgated legislation focuses on road infrastructure, the regulation of the games and the well -being of the elderly, which reinforces the political agenda of the state government “people”.
The signed laws include the law of the maintenance agency of the state of Cross River (amendment), 2025, the Lotteries and Gaming Law of Cross River State, 2025, and the Law of the Center for Senior Citizens of the State of Cross River, 2025.
Speaking at the signing ceremony in Calabar, Governor Otu praised the State Assembly Chamber for his legislative support, describing the laws as appropriate and fundamental for the administration's development plan.
“These laws reflect our commitment to prioritize the needs of people,” said the governor.
“The amendment to the Law of the Highway Maintenance Agency guarantees that our roads receive constant attention, while the law of the game agency will help regulate the sector and increase our income generated internally. The establishment of the center of the elderly affirms our determination to take care of the elderly and vulnerable among us.”
Providing more information about the new laws, president of the State Assembly Chamber, RT. Excmo Elvert Ayambem explained that the law of the amended road maintenance agency requires each of the 18 local government councils of the State to contribute 4% of its monthly federation accounts assignments to finance the maintenance of the road. This, he said, will guarantee the maintenance of sustainable infrastructure throughout the State.
In the law of the center of citizens of the child, the speaker said that the legislation establishes the creation of a central installation in each of the three senatorial districts of the State, which begins in Calabar, to meet the needs of retired and major citizens. Additional support centers will be established throughout the local government headquarters to extend the scope of well -being.
The law of the Lotteries and Games Agency, according to the speaker, is a comprehensive legal framework that includes 12 parts, 102 sections and two schedules. It is aligned with a recent ruling of the Supreme Court that allows the states to regulate play activities and seek to rationalize the licenses, regulation and revenue generation of the game industry in the state of Cross River.
Governor Otu reaffirmed that laws represent strategic steps towards the renewal of infrastructure, economic reform and social inclusion. “This is a government with a human face,” he said. “Our people deserve policies and laws that raise and protect them.”
The legislation is expected to have long -range impacts on the State Development Trajectory, strengthening transparency, economic efficiency and inclusive governance.
