The Prime Minister of Albania, Edi Rama, has presented his new cabinet that includes an ‘artificial intelligence minister (AI) in charge of combating corruption.
The Minister of AI, officially called Diella, the feminine form of the word for “sun” in Albanian, was presented on Friday as a virtual member of the Government.
Rama described her as a “do not present physically present, but created virtually” cabinet, and added that he would help to ensure that public tenders remain free of corruption while making government operations more efficient and transparent.
“Diella will be a tireless partner to ensure that corruption does not find refuge in our institutions,” Rama said in a Facebook publication. “She will help us open a new era of governance that is cleaner, faster and more transparent.”
According to the National Agency of the Albania Information Society, Diella uses the latest AI models to carry out its responsibilities. It was developed earlier this year in association with Microsoft and is already active on the public service platform of E-Albania, where citizens helps navigate the site and access more than one million documents and digital services.
Presented in the traditional Albanese Popular Atue, the appointment of Diella marks a symbolic step in Rama’s promise to use technology to address the long -standing problems of the country of organized crime and corruption.
The Socialist Party of Rama obtained 83 of 140 seats in the parliamentary elections of May, giving him a fourth consecutive mandate. Although this majority allows the party to govern independently, it does not reach the threshold of 93 seats necessary for constitutional amendments.
The government has pledged to achieve the membership of the European Union for Albania in five years, with the aim of completing negotiations by 2027 an objective seen with skepticism by opposition leaders, who argue that the country is not prepared.
Diella is also expected to support local authorities to boost reforms forward and align national standards with those of the EU.
President Bajram Begaj has formally commissioned branch to form the new government, according to movement analysts, legitimize the introduction of the minister with AI.
