The Unique Perspective of a PDP Member: Insights from Akwa Ibom Governor

Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has affirmed that despite being a member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), he does not believe in insulting President Bola Tinubu, who belongs to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

This statement was made by Mr Eno on Friday in Uyo, where he welcomed several members from various political parties, including the APC, who defected to the PDP in the state. The governor’s spokesperson, Ekerete Udoh, released a statement confirming this.

Among those who joined the PDP under the governor’s leadership were former APC chieftain and House of Representatives member, Emmanuel Ukoette; ex-APC spokesperson in Akwa Ibom, Nkereuwem Enyongekere; former commissioner for Science and Technology in the state, Samuel Effanga; former youth leader of the Young Progressives Party, Ubong Edem; former chairperson of Ukanafun Local Government council, Abasiono Udonfuk; and former member of Akwa Ibom House of Assembly, Mabel Udongwo.

Governor Eno’s Message

“Many have asked me, ‘Are you in PDP?’ Yes, I am in PDP, but the kind of PDP I am in does not engage in insulting others,” Governor Eno expressed to the defectors, most of whom were former PDP members who left the party for other political opportunities during general elections.

“As you return, one thing you must refrain from is attacking leaders. Regardless of their position, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, we should show them support and respect. We should refrain from attacking our leaders and adopt a collaborative approach,” he continued.

“I am a pastor who believes in respecting others, showing humility, compassion, and respect to those in authority. This is the approach I will continue to follow. We will work together with the center to bring development to Akwa Ibom; we will not engage in conflicts with the central government,” he added.

Mr Eno praised his predecessor, Udom Emmanuel, for his peaceful administration and assured that he would also prioritize peace during his tenure.

“Without peace, progress is hindered. Therefore, I urge you to drop any negative attitudes and work together. We have one President, and we owe him our loyalty and respect,” he emphasized.

Commitment to PDP

Although Governor Eno expressed allegiance to President Tinubu, he affirmed his commitment to the PDP in Akwa Ibom and advised the defectors to avoid unlawful gatherings.

According to the statement, the state PDP chairperson, Aniekan Akpan, welcomed the defectors and encouraged them to contribute to the party’s growth.

Political Activities

During the event, Godwin Ntukudeh, the governor’s political adviser, presented a register containing over 40,000 new members to Governor Eno. Since assuming office, the governor has advocated for peace and cooperation between his administration and the APC-led federal government, indicating his readiness to work with the opposition at the state level without resorting to criticism of the federal government.
