The Zamfara government indicates the vaccination of oral cholera for more than 878,000 residents

The Government of the State of Zamfara has launched an oral cholera vaccination campaign with 1,176,671 doses, pointing at 878,162 people from 1 to 45 years in six areas of the local government (LGA) most affected by the recent outbreak.

The exercise was officially marked on Saturday at the EMIR of the Bungudu Palace.

The State Health Commissioner, Dr. Nafisa Muhammad Maradun, revealed that the campaign is being carried out in collaboration with the federal government through the National Agency for the Development of Primary Health Care (NPHCDA), the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF and other partners.

According to her, the campaign will cover Gusau, Bungudu, Zurmi, Anka, Talata Mafara and Shinkafi LGA, with a total of 1,176,671 doses of the oral cholera vaccine provided by the NPHCDA.

Dr. Maradun explained that the impulse of vaccination is part of a broader response plan, which includes the activation of the Hospital of State Infectious Diseases in the Damba, the provision of essential medicines for all LGA and a greater surveillance of diseases. He added that the State is also adopting a multisectoral approach through Ruwatsan, focusing on water, sanitation and hygiene interventions (Wash) to complement medical efforts.

In a goodwill, the WHO state coordinator, Dr. Raji Mukhtar, praised Zamfara for his timely intervention, noting that suspects of anger have been reported in the 14 LGA, with laboratory confirmation in seven. He revealed that 85 percent of the load is concentrated in six LGA.

The campaign will cover 20 high -risk rooms and individuals target 1 to 45, with the aim of breaking the transmission and controlling the outbreak.
