The Zamfara State Government, through the Ministry of Health, has announced that a recent cholera outbreak affecting communities has been successfully contained and stated that there are currently no active cases of cholera in the state.
This was announced today by the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Nafisa Mohamed Maradun, during an action review meeting on the response to cholera, held at the Public Health Emergency Operations Center in Gusau.
Nafisa, represented by the Director of Public Health, Dr. Yusuf Haske, confirmed that the state is now cholera-free.
Information and Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Health, Sulaiman Isah, further reported that the milestone was marked by the achievement as proof of the administration’s commitment to transparency, accountability and people-centred governance.
The commissioner gave a comprehensive overview of the response, revealing the full extent of the outbreak: the state recorded 15,464 cases of cholera, with 15,265 patients successfully treated and discharged, while, tragically, 192 deaths were documented across the state’s 14 local government areas.
He noted that the state government is now developing a robust pandemic preparedness plan to address future public health threats. These threats include cholera, diarrhea, cerebrospinal meningitis (CSM), heavy metal pollution, and other diseases of public health importance.
He added that letters of thanks have been sent to all supporting partners in recognition of their vital contributions and commitment.
Speaking at the review, on behalf of all partners, Dr Raji Mukhtar, State Coordinator, World Health Organization (WHO), highlighted the critical importance of timely planning, proper coordination under IMS and data reporting.
The review meeting was attended by major health partners including WHO, UNICEF, AFENET, Solidarity Support, IRC, Red Cross and Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF).
Other key and relevant government MDAs include Ruwatsan, PHCB, Humanitarian, ZESA, Ministry of Information and Environment.
