The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa'ad Abubakar III, has expressed a strong support for the recent humanitarian initiative of the European Union in Nigeria, entitled “Media advice: the EU and the UN agencies launch 60 million joint initiatives to boost social protection, health and resistance in Nigeria.”
He described this effort as timely and strategic, intended to raise the vulnerable communities of the region.
The Sultan made these comments on Monday while organizing a high -level delegation of eight European Union ambassadors in his palace in Sokoto.
This visit was recognized as unprecedented in its scale and importance, marking the official launch of the new EU financed project designed to improve health, education and social protection for marginalized groups, particularly women, adolescents and people displaced internally.
“This afternoon, according to Allah's will, we will all witness an event that I think has never happened not only in Sokoto but perhaps throughout the northern region,” said Sultan.
“His visit sends a strong message to those who do not want Nigeria well. We are not beyond redemption. We are a good people and we know that the good of us must work together to overcome the few bad elements.”
Emphasizing the importance of interreligious education and harmony, Sultan Abubakar praised EU's sustained commitment to Nigeria and reiterated the critical role of traditional and religious institutions in the transformation of the community.
He referred to the agile initiative as an example of past collaborative success, adding that educating the child of a child remains central to sustainable development.
In his speech, the EU delegation chief to Nigeria and Western Africa, Gautier Mignot, praised Sultan's leadership, noting that his voice had constantly promoted dialogue, unity and peaceful coexistence within Nigeria and beyond.
“Its eminence, its influence and defense of peace are deeply respected throughout Europe. We are here today to deepen that association through the launch of social protection, access to health and resilience construction in the state project of Sokoto.”
He explained that the launch of the project also marks the beginning of the month of Europe, a series of activities that commemorate 75 years of European integration, with Sokoto chosen as the start location in recognition of its cultural and humanitarian importance.
The ambassador extended an invitation to the Sultan to attend or send a representative to Europe Day celebrations in Abuja at the end of this week.
Finally, the Sultan assured the delegation of continuous collaboration. “In us, you will always find good partners and friends committed. Together, we will build a more peaceful, educated and prosperous Nigeria.”
