Former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Senator representing Edo North, Adams Oshiomhole, has said President Bola Tinubu is making visible progress in addressing Nigeria’s security challenges.
Speaking on the television channel’s Politics Today program on Monday, Oshiomhole argued that the country’s security situation has improved compared to the conditions before APC assumed power in 2015.
He recalled a period when national elections were postponed because Boko Haram had taken control of several areas in the northeast.
“No one is pretending that it is all over, but no one is denying that progress has been made because I was in this country where we were forced to postpone the national elections because Boko Haram had taken power and installed foreign flags in about 81 local government areas in the northeast,” he said.
Oshiomhole highlighted the increase in terrorism-related sentences but questioned why some judges impose lighter sentences despite clear provisions of the law.
He said only the president has the legal authority to grant clemency and stressed that judges should not exceed their constitutional limits.
The former Edo State governor attributed recent security developments to better intelligence gathering and greater coordination under the Office of the National Security Adviser.
He added that Tinubu had demonstrated commitment by appointing new service chiefs and directing them to respond more aggressively to ongoing threats.

Oshiomhole also said the president directed the inspector general of police to recruit “30,000” additional officers to strengthen the police presence across the country, allowing the military to focus on basic defense tasks.
He added that the Senate, following the abduction of school girls in Kebbi, advised the President to begin the process of recruiting 100,000 additional personnel for the armed forces.
According to him, these measures reflect the urgency shared by the entire government, particularly in light of the country’s growing population and limited security personnel.
He admitted that challenges remain, but insisted that the administration’s actions show clear intent.
“What we can ask ourselves is: Does this president care? Yes. Is he taking action? Yes. Are people being detained? Yes. Are we starting to see convictions? Yes. Has the problem completely gone away? No,” he said.
