The White House has withdrawn the nomination of multimillionaire businessman Jared Isaacman to lead NASA, a few days before its programmed vote for the Senate confirmation.
“It is essential that the next NASA leader is in full alignment with the first Amazon of America of President Trump and that President Trump directly announce a replacement,” said White House spokeswoman Liz Huston.
Isaacman is the CEO of the SHIFT4 payment processing company and has long -standing links with Elon Musk. He has worked with Spacex in commercial space flight missions, even as a member of the Polaris Dawn crew.
During his April confirmation hearing before the Senate Committee of Commerce, Isaacman said that “it would prioritize the sending of US astronauts to Mars.”
He also tried to distance himself from Musk while the Democrats questioned their past affiliations.
While both Musk and Trump have pressed for the exploration of Mars, Isaacman declared during the audience that he would prioritize a lunar landing before a Mars mission.
“After an exhaustive review of the previous associations, I withdraw the nomination of Jared Isaacman to direct NASA.
“I will soon announce a new nominated that will be aligned on the mission and put the United States first in space,” Trump said in a publication on social networks.
