The authorities have identified Vance Boelter, 57, such as the suspect in the directed shootings of the legislators of Minnesota, Melissa Hortman and John Hoffman.
The sources confirmed their identity to Associated Press. Documents obtained by 5 Eyewitness News Show Boelter lives in Green isle, Minnesota.
He was appointed member of the Development Council of the Governor's workforce in 2016 under former governor Mark Dayton and again in 2019 under Governor Tim Walz. His most recent mandate ended in January 2023.
The Democratic Speaker of the House of Representatives, Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, were shot dead on his home in Brooklyn Park.
Walz described the murders a “politically motivated murder.”
At a press conference on Saturday morning, Walz also confirmed that DFL state senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were shot several times at his Champlin house.
A couple's nephew wrote on social networks that they shot five or six times.
The Hoffmans underwent surgery at Mercy hospital in Coon Rapids. Walz said he was “cautiously optimistic” about his survival.
Walz said: “Our state lost a great leader, and lost the most beloved friends. The speaker Hortman was someone who served the state of Minnesota with grace, compassion, humor and a sense of service.
“It was a formidable public servant, an accessory and a giant in Minnesota. He woke up every day determined to make this state a better place. It is irreplaceable and will be surprised by many.”
The authorities say that the gunman passed through a police officer to carry out both attacks.
A human hunt is ongoing in Brooklyn Park, and an order of refuge in the place remains in force for the surrounding neighborhoods.
The Superintendent of the Minnesota Criminal apprehension office, Drewy Evans, said the police responded for the first time to Hoffman's house around 2 in the morning.
At 3:35 am, the officers were called to their Hortman residence for a similar shooting.
Brooklyn Park officers had been proactively reviewing Hortman due to their proximity Toy Hoffman. When they arrived, they met the suspect.
Shot the officers. They returned the fire, but he managed to escape.
Hortman had served in the house of Minnesota since 2004. He was a speaker from the camera from 2019 to the beginning of 2025.
She and her husband are survived by her two children.
All other Minnesota legislators are now in protective custody in coordination with the application of state and local law.
FBI officials and the alcohol, tobacco, firearms and explosives office are also helping in the investigation.
