President Muhammadu Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has ensured that Nigeria will continue to support the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) based in N’djamena, Republic of Chad.

Mr. Femi Adesina, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Advertising, in a statement in Abuja on Friday said that the president gave assurances when he received Amb. Mamman Nuhu, Executive Secretary, Lake Chad Basin Commission and Chief of Mission, MNJTF.

According to him, Nigeria will continue to provide support despite what he calls “the low ebb of resources caused by COVID-19 and falling oil prices.”

President Buhari said that despite the scarcity of resources, the security of Nigeria and that of its neighbors should have a place of honor, “so I will consult with all relevant officials and we will do our best.”

Nuhu had previously briefed the president on the proposed Lake Chad recharge, which he said was one of the priorities of the Lake Chad Basin Commission, “and for which he has great passion.”

He also informed the Nigerian leader that the governments of China and Italy were very supportive and that positive action would be taken soon.

Nuhu praised the countries that had contributed troops to the MNJTF, adding, however, that the kinetic military approach alone would not eradicate the insurgency, and that root causes, in particular poverty, should also be emphasized. (NAN)
