Withdraw troops from the southeast, dialogue with igbos – Onyeka Onwenu

Veteran Nigerian singer and human rights activist Onyeka Onwenu has told President Muhammadu Buhari to withdraw troops deployed in the southeast.

He urged Buhari to dialogue with the region’s youth and secessionist agitators to stop the killings.

Onwenu, speaking at a press conference organized by the Credible Igbo Women Initiative, CIWI, in Lagos, expressed concern about the senseless killings in Igboland.

She said: “Something terrible is happening in the southeast right now. I come from the state of Imo and I know what people go through there. Please, the federal government should stop the killings.

“Some people want to campaign for the referendum, it is their right. Some people want to scream that they are being marginalized, it is their right. Listen to them. You may not agree with them, but they have the right to speak. “

He called on the Nigerian government to speak to aggrieved parties and youth in the southeastern region, adding that the Igbo have the right to agitate.

“We are pleading, we are asking, please, let’s sit down and talk about what’s going on. Let’s call our people who are agitating, who are not happy with the situation and talk to them. Government of Nigeria let’s talk. Get the troops out of Igboland, ”he said.

Onwenu also called on young people to engage in dialogue with the government.

“I also want to take this opportunity to reach out to our young people and embrace dialogue. Please come, let’s talk. We will defend the rights of the Igbo, ”Onwenu pleaded.
