The tensions exploded on Sunday at a high -level meeting of all the interested parties of the Progressives Congress (APC) in the Northeast after Vice President Kashim Shettima was remarkably omitted of a backup speech, which caused the indignation between the loyal ones of the party.
The meeting, held in the state of Gombe, drew ministers, legislators, governors and other prominent figures of parties in the region. The National President of APC, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, directed a delegation of senior officials to the meeting aimed at gathering support before the 2027 elections.
The problems began when Mustapha Salihu, the national vice president of the APC (Northeast), openly declared support for the offer of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's second mandate, but did not mention Vice President Shettima, an outstanding son of the region, in his comments.
The omission quickly caused a violent reaction, with angry delegates throwing insults and threatening to physically confront Salihu. Security agents had to intervene, escorting it out of the place to avoid greater escalation.
In an attempt to calm the situation, the Vice President of National (North), Alhaji Bukar Dalori, went to the meeting and issued a joint support of President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima. But the atmosphere remained accused, and Dalori was also escorted under security protection.
Despite the row, the governor of the state of Yobe, Mai Mal Buni, praised the initiative of the leadership of the party, describing the meeting as a platform for self -assessment in the middle of the period and political consolidation.
“Let me start by appreciating the national leadership of the party to create a platform at the zonal level, which has provided the party the opportunity to take stock and analyze the achievements and challenges of the party as a self -assessment in the middle of the deadline,” Buni said.
He said that the meeting reflects the commitment of the APC to the good governance, the provision of services and the unit in the six geopolitical zones, which describes the northeast as a historically significant block in Nigeria's policy.
“From the First Republic to date, the subregion of Northeast has remained a strong political bloc in Nigeria's political history.
