Famous Jamaican reggae singer, Buju Banton, has said he has roots in the Igbo tribe from Nigeria.
Buju Banton talked about this on the ‘Drink Champs’ podcast with hosts N.O.R.E and DJ EFN. He explained that his people, called the Maroons, come from the Igbo tribe in Nigeria.
Buju is worried that their traditional land is in danger. The Jamaican government is letting Chinese and other foreigners take over their area, which is not good for the Maroons.
He said, “Our way of life and our land are in danger because the Jamaican government is allowing Chinese and other people to come into the Cockpit region. This area is special and important to us Maroons.”
He added, “Maroons are some of the brave fighters on my island. We fought the British a lot. We are known as Blackmaroons. My family originally comes from Nigeria. Because of my family history, I am an Igbo man.”
