The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) has sensitized students and market leaders about the dangers of plastic pollution in the commemoration of World Environment Day 2025, with the subject, 'Beat plastic pollution'.
The awareness and awareness campaign took place in the Ogunpa market, Ibadan, and Basorun Ogunmola High School, Ring Road, Ibadan, on Thursday, June 5, where IBEDC also donated waste containers as part of the efforts to curb plastic pollution.
The commercial director of IBEDC, Dr. Adewumi, declared that the campaign was part of the company's corporate social responsibility and highlighted the dangers of plastic pollution for human health, the environment, animals and aquatic life.
He emphasized the importance of educating young people about plastic pollution and encouraging them to take care of the environment.
Adewumi said: “We are here to commemorate World Environment Day to educate students and raise awareness about the environment so that people take into account that plastic pollution is harmful to the environment. This is our own way of giving back to society.
“We have to start early because plastic has been a threat to society. There are many health problems attributed to plastics how we eliminate them and how they help the propagation of diseases such as malaria. Beyond that, it also affects other animals because they do not know the difference between what food is and what is plastic.”
The engineer Abiodun Dirisu, the head, safety and the environment, IBEDC, emphasized the need for everyone to contribute to curb plastic pollution by refraining from getting rid of plastic bags or bottles in rivers, river roads, gutters and other inappropriate places.
Dirisu said: “Pollution has become a global concern, and in the center of everything there is plastic pollution; the river paths are being blocked and the environment is covered.
“The need to get plastic waste from the environment cannot exaggerate. Therefore, IBEDC has chosen to join the rest of the world to commemorate World Environment Day.
“In the Ogunpa market, we were there to continue sensitization, which is the need for everyone to assume the responsibility of adding pollution problems, especially with regard to plastics. Sensitization is that we cannot be based on waste anyway. Plastics can recycle and become for other purposes; it will be recycled.”
The director of Ogunmola High School, Ring Road, Ibadan, Mrs. Omobola Adeniran, expressed her gratitude to the IBEDC for the donation and promised to make proper use of waste containers to keep the school environment clean.
She said: “We really appreciate IBEDC for choosing our school as one of the schools that benefited from the donation to Mark World Environment Day.
“We promise that we will use waste containers in order to clean the environment to avoid pollution.”
Some of the leaders of the Ogunpa market, including the president of the Progressive Forum of Young Ajakale, Raheem Kazeem; Balogun Oja, Ogunpa Oyo, Musbaudeen Adesola; And Iyalaje Oja Ogunpa Oyo, Alhaja Dasola Azaez, declared its resolution and commitment to guarantee a clean market environment.
The IBEDC also took the opportunity to raise awareness about the payment of the IBEDC, a self -use application designed to help customers pay electricity bills, consult, claim complaints, track transactions and electricity consumption rate, and obtain other information on the comfort of their homes.
