The House of the Assembly of the State of Cross River has suspended Theresa Ushie, president of the Local Government Council of Bekwarra, for three months.
This action follows a petition and resolution of nine of the ten councilors within the local government, which was reviewed by the Assembly and other key stakeholders.
The councilors had tried to accuse the president of LG three months earlier, citing accusations of corruption, misconduct, abuse of being able and stopping the salaries of the councilors, among other complaints.
They installed their concerns to the State Assembly, the governor, his deputy and the president of the State Party.
After the discussions with the interested parties of the local government, including Governor Bassey Otu, the president of the State Assembly, the state president of the APC ruling party and the councilors, it was concluded that suspending the president for three months was appropriate.
This decision adheres to the procedures specified in Section 14 (3) of the State Government Law 2025, according to the President of the State Assembly RT. Excmo Elvert Ayambem.
During the suspension, the Hon. Egbung Odama, vice president of the Bekwarra Council, will assume the role of interim president.
In addition, the State Assembly established an investigation committee to examine the accusations presented by the councilors.
