Israel is considering launching a military strike against Iran in the next few days, according to three people familiar with the matter.
The sources said they were not aware of a direct role from the United States in any Israeli potential operation. However, they noticed that the United States could still offer logistical support or share intelligence with Israel if the strike continues.
This development occurs when the United States prepares for a new round of nuclear conversations with Iranian officials scheduled for this weekend.
“The main advisor and special envoy Steve Witkoff plans to travel to Muscat on Sunday for a sixth round of conversations with Iran,” said a source familiar with his plans. “Discussions are expected to be direct and indirect, as in previous rounds.”
Meanwhile, Iranian President Masoud Peeshkian said Thursday that Iran will continue to enrich uranium, regardless of the result of the conversations or threats of military action.
“We are going to our own path and we will have enrichment,” said Pe fishhkian during the comments in Ilam, a western province of Iran.
He also emphasized the resistance of the country.
“We will build this country with these same young people. It is not as if, for example, someone bombards our place, that is the end. All this is in mind. Whatever they do, we will rebuild,” he added.
In Washington, the Secretary of Defense of the United States, Pete Hegseth, addressed the situation during an audience of the Chamber's Armed Services Committee.
The representative RO Khanna, D-Calif., Challenged him on the position of the administration towards the possible Israeli action.
“Will you get up today and make clear [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu that climbing, what is threatening yesterday, is not of American interest, shouldn't it drag the United States to the war with Iran? “Khanna asked.
Hegseth replied: “Well, congressman, that question included a lot of speculation. What I know is that Bibi Netanyahu will put his country first, and we are going to put our country first, and we are properly positioned in the region … for any possible contingency.”
He added that the United States, under President Donald Trump, remains focused on diplomacy.
“We are committed to creating conditions for peace,” said Hegseth.
The next few days can be critical, as nuclear conversations resume and Israel weighs their next movement.
