The spokesman for the Nigerian Senate, YEMI Adaramiodu, has declared that the country's democracy will be at risk if the National Assembly is made to operate part -time.

Adamiodu announced this while responding to the growing calls for the country to adopt a part -time parliamentary system.

Speaking during an interview on Canales television on Friday, Adaramiodu said that democracy in Nigeria would be in danger if legislators in both legislative cameras pass from the current full -time agreement to a part -time status.

According to him, this agreement would weaken democratic institutions and governance structures. “A part -time parliament would mean a part -time democracy,” he said, emphasizing that the country cannot afford to run that risk.

“If the Parliament is part -time, then it means that democracy is part -time. There is no democracy that gives its parliament and prosperous,” said Adaramiodu, a member of the District of Progressive Congress (APC), which represents the senatorial district of Ekiti South Senatorial.

He explained that legislators in red and green cameras carry the burden of their constituents and play critical roles beyond legislation.

Parliament, he said, also performs supervision functions and defenders of the needs of the people they represent.

“We are going home almost and every time, and we are the ones who give birth to a new baby, ask for names of names. When they are building a new house, it is us who ask for help.

“Then, if Parliament was not there, who do you expect our voters to run?

“Parliament is not just sitting in the plenary and making laws alone. And when we make laws, we follow it.”
